The family-friendly towns in Upstate SC that I send most young families to are Five Forks, Simpsonville, Greer, Mauldin, Travelers Rest and Taylors. Each one gives you parks, schools and a real sense of community within Greenville County, and they all sit close enough to Greenville for an easy drive to work. The right pick comes down to your commute, your budget and how your family likes to spend a Saturday.
I was born and raised in Greenville, left for a while, and came back. I also spent years as a Greenville County Sheriff’s Deputy, so I’ve driven every one of these towns at all hours. Here’s how I’d break them down for a family.

Which of the Family-Friendly Towns in Upstate SC Is Best?
There isn’t one winner. Five Forks and Simpsonville fit families who want newer subdivisions and short trips to shopping. Greer suits families who split time between Greenville and Spartanburg. Travelers Rest is the pick for outdoor families. Mauldin and Taylors give you a central location and a little more room in the budget.
Before you fall for a house, check the school zone. Attendance lines in Greenville County don’t always follow town names, and two homes on the same road can feed different schools. Look up the address with Greenville County Schools, then read each school’s official rating on SC School Report Cards.
๐ณ Five Forks and Simpsonville: Newer Neighborhoods and Main Street Fun
Five Forks sits on the east side of Greenville County near Woodruff Road. It’s mostly sidewalk-lined subdivisions, community parks and playgrounds, with groceries and restaurants close by. Families ask me about it because of the schools. Oakview Elementary on Godfrey Road lists U.S. News & World Report “Best Elementary Schools” recognition for 2022, 2024 and 2025 on its district profile.
Simpsonville is right next door and mixes small-town history with newer construction. You’ll find:
- A walkable Main Street with seasonal events
- Heritage Park and the CCNB Amphitheatre, which holds about 14,000 people and books concerts and family events
- A mix of established homes and new builds at different price points
The city approved an 11-year deal in 2026 with Opry Entertainment Group to run the amphitheatre, with at least $6 million in planned upgrades to parking, traffic flow and guest amenities. Is Greer a Good Place to Raise a Family?
Yes, Greer works well for families, especially when one parent works toward Spartanburg and the other toward Greenville. It sits between both cities, near GSP International Airport and the BMW Manufacturing plant. Downtown Greer has been revitalized, and the neighborhoods around it stay quiet.
Schools are a big reason families look here. Riverside High School, on Hammett Bridge Road in Greer, earned an “Excellent” rating on the 2023-24 SC School Report Card. Its district profile also lists it as having the highest overall performance among Greenville County high schools in 2024.
For weekends, Lake Robinson is owned by Greer CPW and has picnic shelters, fishing and free kayaks on a first-come, first-served basis. It’s also a drinking water source, so the rules there are stricter than on a big recreation lake. More on the town in my Greer, South Carolina explained post.
โพ Mauldin: Central Location and Year-Round Kids’ Programs
Mauldin sits between Greenville and Simpsonville with quick access to I-385 and I-85. That makes it a strong choice for parents with a commute in either direction.
The city’s recreation department is the draw for kids. The Mauldin Sports Center has a 12,800-square-foot gym, an indoor climbing wall and a fitness area. What Makes Travelers Rest Good for Outdoor Families?
Travelers Rest, or TR, gives families direct access to the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail and mountain views north of Greenville. The trail system runs about 32 miles and links TR, Greenville and Fountain Inn, so kids can ride bikes on a path that stays away from cars.
A few things families use in TR every week:
- Travelers Rest Farmers Market on Saturdays at Trailblazer Park, right off the trail, with 85+ local vendors, live music and food trucks
- Sunrift Adventures at 1 Center Street, an outdoor shop open since 1980 for bikes, paddling gear and rentals
- Small-town events on Main Street throughout the year

Taylors sits between Greer and Greenville. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods, mountain views on clear days, and prices that often stretch further than in the closer-in Greenville suburbs.
The weekend spot is Taylors Mill at 250 Mill Street, a restored 1920s textile mill with more than 70 tenants. It has 13 Stripes Brewery, The Farehouse restaurant, Pinky’s Revenge arcade and an event space. It’s an easy place to take kids and still get an adult meal.

When I worked for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, I learned that a neighborhood’s feel changes by the hour. Visit at 8 a.m. on a school day and again at 9 p.m. on a Friday. Watch how traffic moves on the main road, where kids wait for the bus, and whether people are out walking.
