🌄 Paris Mountain State Park: Greenville’s Backyard Escape
Paris Mountain State Park is a 1930s state park about five miles north of downtown Greenville, SC, with roughly 17 miles of trails and four lakes. You can hike, mountain bike, paddle, swim in season, fish, and camp without leaving the Greenville area. It’s about a 15-minute drive from downtown Greenville or Travelers Rest.
If you’re thinking about relocating to Greenville, or you just want a healthier routine, this is one of the first places I tell people to go. It shows you what everyday life here can look like.
Where Is Paris Mountain State Park?
The park sits about five miles north of downtown Greenville, between Greenville and Travelers Rest. The address is 2401 State Park Road, Greenville, SC 29609. From downtown or from Travelers Rest it’s roughly a 15-minute drive, which makes it one of the easiest state parks to reach in the whole Upstate.
That closeness is the point. You don’t need a full weekend or a long drive. You can hit a trail before work, paddle after dinner in summer, or bring the kids for an hour on a Sunday.
Paris Mountain also has real history. The land was acquired from the City of Greenville in 1935, and the mountain had served as a city water source from about 1890 to 1916. It’s one of 16 South Carolina state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. The mountain itself rises above 2,000 feet.
What Are the Best Trails at Paris Mountain?
For a hard workout, Sulphur Springs is the classic: a steep, rocky loop of about 3.6 miles. For something easy, the loop around Lake Placid is under a mile and good for families. Brissy Ridge is a rocky ridge loop of about 2.4 miles that mountain bikers love. The park has around 17 miles of trails in all.
- Sulphur Springs Trail (about 3.6 miles, strenuous). This one is for experienced hikers. It’s narrow, steep, and rocky in spots, and passes near Mountain Lake with laurel and rhododendron along the way.
- Lake Placid loop (under a mile, easy). Good for families and a relaxed walk around the water.
- Brissy Ridge Trail (about 2.4 miles). A ridge-side loop with rocky climbs and descents. Popular with trail runners and mountain bikers.
Mountain bikers, note this: bikes are not allowed on any trail on Saturdays. Every other day is fair game on the bike-legal trails, and some sections are foot traffic only. In winter, the park has stayed open on Tuesday evenings for night riding, so check the park’s site for the current schedule.
Dogs are welcome on trails on a leash no longer than six feet.
Can You Swim, Kayak, or Fish at Paris Mountain?
Yes. Lake Placid has a roped-off swimming area in season, and self-serve kayak, paddleboard, and pedal boat rentals run 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Fishing is allowed with a valid South Carolina license for anyone 16 and older. Bass, bream, and catfish are in the park’s lakes. Private boats are not allowed.
💡 Pro tip: after a hike, rent a kayak, paddleboard, or pedal boat and spend an hour on Lake Placid. Or bring your fishing license and cast a line.
- Lake Placid is the easy one to reach. Bank fishing has parking close by.
- North Lake (also called Reservoir #3) is quieter. It takes about a 2-mile hike to get there.
- The other two park lakes are Mountain Lake and Buckhorn Lake.
Swimming is only allowed in the marked area, and only when weather allows.
What Is Paris Mountain Like in Each Season?
It’s a year-round park. Summer is for swimming, paddling, and picnics. Fall brings color on the ridges and cooler trail runs. Winter is quiet and good for long hikes with fewer people. Spring brings wildflowers back to the trails. The park is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.
- Summer: kayaking, swimming, picnics, hiking
- Fall: foliage and crisp trail runs
- Winter: quiet hiking and fewer crowds
- Spring: wildflowers and the park’s nature programs
📍 Don’t skip the Park Center. It’s in a stone bathhouse and has historical exhibits, a classroom, and a gift shop. It’s a good stop with kids.
🏕️ Camping, Picnic Shelters, and Group Spaces
Planning a family reunion, birthday, or church lunch? The park has six picnic shelters you can rent. If you’re coming solo with a sandwich and a book, there are plenty of quiet spots too.
For overnight stays, there are 39 paved campsites (13 with tent pads) plus 5 trailside camping sites. Camp Buckhorn, the historic group camp, is booked by phone with a two-night minimum.
Admission at my last check was $6 for adults, $3.75 for SC seniors 65 and up, $3.50 for kids 6 to 15, and free for kids 5 and under. Fees change, so confirm on the South Carolina State Parks site before you go.

I was born and raised here. I left for a while, and I came back. One big reason was access to parks like this one. As a former Greenville County Sheriff’s Deputy, I know the roads on this side of the county well, and I can tell you which areas give you an easy drive to the park gate.
