Moving to Greenville SC? Plan an Upstate Scouting Trip First ๐ŸšŒ

Moving to Greenville SC goes a lot smoother when you spend one weekend here before you buy. A scouting trip packs a guided neighborhood tour, a morning of home showings and real downtime on our trails into three days. You’ll leave knowing which two or three areas fit you, so you can move fast when the right house hits the market.

I grew up in Greenville, left, and came back, and I spent years patrolling this county as a Greenville County Sheriff’s Deputy. I plan these weekends the way I’d show a friend around. Here’s what a typical one looks like.

What Is an Upstate SC Scouting Trip?

A scouting trip is a planned weekend visit built around how you want to live, not just which houses are for sale. You see neighborhoods, drive real commutes, eat where locals eat and tour homes with me. It’s the best way to test the Upstate before you sign anything.

Most of my clients come in Friday and leave Sunday afternoon. The plan below is a starting point. I change it based on your budget, your kids, your job location and what you do on weekends.

โœˆ๏ธ Friday: Arrival and the Big-Picture Tour

Most clients fly into Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP). The first afternoon is the Make Greenville Yours “Get Moving” tour, a private 3-hour guided drive led by Mike Cruice. It covers Greenville and the surrounding towns, with local history and where the area is headed.

On the tour you’ll see:

  • Downtown Greenville and the Village of West Greenville
  • Nearby towns like Mauldin, Simpsonville, Greer, Taylors and Travelers Rest
  • Shopping centers, hospitals and schools
  • Future development plans and how they may affect neighborhoods

By dinner you’ll have a clear idea where to focus. For the growth side of the story, read my Greenville development projects post before you come. ๐Ÿ‘‰ And check the blog for Greenville SC weekend events while you’re in town.

Friday dinner picks:

  • Soby’s at 207 South Main Street: Southern-inspired cooking with local, seasonal ingredients
  • Jianna at 600 South Main Street: modern Italian and fresh oysters, upstairs, overlooking Falls Park

๐Ÿก Saturday: Touring Homes and Living the Upstate Life

Saturday is for seeing homes in person. We’ll spend 3 to 4 hours touring houses across Greenville and nearby towns. I mix in stops that show you everyday life, like Woodruff Road shopping and Downtown Greer.

This is also when I have you drive your future commute. If you’ll work near GSP or downtown, we’ll run that route so you know what you’re signing up for. Not sure where to start? My where to live in Greenville guide lays out the main options.

Saturday dinner picks:

  • Halls Chophouse at 550 South Main Street at RiverPlace: upscale steaks on Main Street
  • Gather GVL at 126 Augusta Street: a food hall with several local vendors and rooftop seating, good for families who can’t agree on dinner

๐ŸŒณ Sunday: Trails, Brunch and Open Houses

Sunday is for slowing down and seeing how people here spend a day off. Pick a trail, have brunch, and if time allows, walk through a few open houses before your flight.

If you love the trail, see my Swamp Rabbit Trail neighborhoods guide. If the mountain is more your speed, read about living near Paris Mountain.

Where Should I Stay on a Greenville Scouting Trip?

Stay where you think you might live. If downtown living appeals to you, book downtown and walk to dinner. If you’re leaning toward a quiet suburb, stay there and see how far everything feels. If you’ll travel a lot for work, try a hotel near the airport.

Clients love my curated Airbnb recommendations, and I can also help match you with hotels downtown, near the airport or in a quieter suburb.

Why Book a Scouting Trip Before Moving to Greenville SC?

Because a weekend here saves you from an expensive guess. Photos and maps can’t show you traffic at 5 p.m., how loud a street gets on Friday night, or how a neighborhood feels when you step out of the car. A short visit answers those questions before you sign a contract.

You’ll leave with a clear sense of neighborhoods, amenities and community culture. When the right home hits the market, you’re ready to act, even if you’re writing the offer from another state.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ Chris’s Take: See It the Way a Deputy Would

When I patrolled Greenville County, I saw how the same road changes from morning to night. I bring that to every scouting trip. I’ll point out where traffic backs up, which areas are growing fastest, and what a street looks like after dark.

I also tell clients to come back to a favorite neighborhood a second time on their own. Grab a coffee, walk around, and talk to a neighbor if you can. Five minutes on a sidewalk can tell you more than an hour online. For the bigger picture on making the move, see my relocating to Greenville SC post.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a scouting trip to Greenville SC be?

A long weekend, Friday to Sunday, works for most people. That gives you time for a guided neighborhood tour, a few hours of home showings and some time on the trails or downtown.

What airport do I fly into for Greenville SC?

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP). It sits between Greenville and Spartanburg, near Greer.

What is the Make Greenville Yours tour?

It’s a private guided driving tour of Greenville and nearby towns led by Mike Cruice. The “Get Moving” tour lasts about 3 hours, and shorter and custom tours are also offered.

Can I see homes on a scouting trip?

Yes. I set aside 3 to 4 hours on Saturday for showings, and I can line up open houses for Sunday so you can look around on your own.

Is it worth visiting before moving to Greenville SC?

Yes. A visit lets you test commutes, neighborhoods and daily life in person, which helps you avoid buying in the wrong spot.
