The 5 Best Greenville SC Suburbs, Ranked by Real Drive Times 🏡

Quick answer: Mauldin ranks #1 for overall balance, about 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Greenville and 20 minutes from GSP. Five Forks is best for school-focused families, Simpsonville for value and space, Greer for frequent travelers (15 to 20 minutes to GSP), and Travelers Rest for an outdoor lifestyle. Pick the suburb that fits your daily drive.

If you’re moving to the Upstate, don’t focus on the house first. Instead, focus on the lifestyle that house gives you. 🚗

I’m Chris Horrell. I was born and raised in Greenville, and I’ve watched this town grow for more than 40 years. In this guide, I rank five popular Greenville SC suburbs: Travelers Rest, Greer, Simpsonville, Five Forks, and Mauldin.

Each one is scored on the five things that actually shape your day-to-day routine.

🤔 Why Your Suburb Matters More Than You Think

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people. Many folks say they live in Greenville, but they actually live 25 minutes away. As a result, their daily lives look completely different.

Jobs, healthcare, and opportunity bring people here. However, traffic, hospital access, and interstate access decide whether you’ll truly love it.

📋 How We Ranked These Greenville SC Suburbs

Every town was judged on the same five categories:

  • 🏙️ Downtown drive: How long it takes to reach downtown Greenville
  • 🏥 Medical care: Distance to major hospitals and specialists
  • 🍽️ Dining and daily life: Restaurants, groceries, and errands
  • ✈️ Airport and interstates: Access to GSP, I-85, and I-385
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Best fit: Who each town actually works for

⚡ Quick Comparison Table

Rank Suburb Downtown Greenville GSP Airport Best For
🥇 1 Mauldin 15–20 min ~20 min Balance of everything
🥈 2 Five Forks 20–25 min 10–15 min School-focused families
🥉 3 Simpsonville 20–25 min 20–25 min Value and space
4 Greer 25–30 min 15–20 min Frequent travelers
5 Travelers Rest 15–20 min 30–35 min Outdoor lifestyle

🌲 #5: Travelers Rest (TR)

I love TR. However, you have to buy here for the right reasons.

Downtown drive: Downtown Greenville is about 15 to 20 minutes away via Poinsett Highway.

Medical care: Prisma Health downtown is roughly 20 to 25 minutes away. Prisma Health Travelers Rest handles primary and urgent care. Still, you’ll drive downtown for specialists.

Dining and daily life: TR is very walkable. You’ll find plenty of coffee shops, breakfast spots, and bike shops. On the other hand, big grocery or Woodruff Road runs take 15 to 20 minutes.

Airport and interstates: GSP is about 30 to 35 minutes out. I-385 is around 20 minutes, and I-85 is 25 to 30 minutes. In short, you’re not interstate-close.

Who it’s for: TR wins on lifestyle if you want trails, Blue Ridge views, and small-town Saturday mornings. That said, it’s a tough fit if you fly for work every week. 🚴

✈️ #4: Greer

Greer is where things get interesting. Downtown Greenville is about 25 to 30 minutes away. However, Greer makes up for it in other areas.

Medical care: This is Greer’s superpower. 💪 Prisma Health Greer Memorial Hospital is right in town, about 10 to 15 minutes from most neighborhoods. Pelham Medical Center is also nearby.

Dining and daily life: Downtown Greer’s Trade Street has plenty of great options. Plus, Woodruff Road dining and shopping are about 10 minutes away.

Airport and interstates: Greer is closest to everything travel-related. GSP is only 15 to 20 minutes away. I-85 is 5 to 10 minutes, and I-385 is about 15 minutes.

Who it’s for: Greer suits relocation buyers who travel often or work along I-85. It’s also great if you want new construction near Pelham or Riverside. Essentially, you trade downtown-close for plane-close.

🏡 #3: Simpsonville

Simpsonville is all about value and space. As a result, it’s a favorite for growing families.

Downtown drive: Downtown Greenville is about 20 to 25 minutes away via I-385 or Woodruff Road.

Medical care: Prisma Health downtown is about 20 minutes away. St. Francis Eastside is roughly 15 minutes. In addition, Fairview Road has lots of primary care offices.

Dining and daily life: Main Street Simpsonville and Fairview Road offer groceries, chains, and local favorites. Therefore, you won’t drive far for dinner.

Airport and interstates: I-385 runs right through town. GSP is 20 to 25 minutes away, and I-85 is about 20 minutes via I-385.

Who it’s for: Simpsonville fits families who want a yard and HOA amenities. At the same time, you can still reach downtown without living there.

🎓 #2: Five Forks

I spent countless weekends in Five Forks and lived there for years. So hear me out.

Downtown drive: Downtown Greenville is about 20 to 25 minutes away. That feels quick, until you hit Woodruff Road at the wrong time. 😅 That traffic will test your patience.

Medical care: Prisma Health downtown is 20 to 25 minutes away. Meanwhile, St. Francis Eastside is about 15 to 20 minutes.

Dining and daily life: You’ll reach almost everything within 10 to 15 minutes. That includes Woodruff Road and the Scuffletown corridor.

Airport and interstates: GSP and the interstates are about 10 to 15 minutes away, depending on your direction.

Who it’s for: Five Forks is ideal for school-driven buyers. It offers highly rated schools and a master-planned feel.

🏆 #1: Mauldin

For most relocation buyers, Mauldin comes out on top. It isn’t the flashiest choice. Instead, it wins on minutes.

Downtown drive: Downtown Greenville is about 15 to 20 minutes away via Butler Road and I-385. In fact, it’s the easiest commute of all five.

Medical care: Prisma Health downtown is roughly 15 minutes away. St. Francis Eastside is only 10 to 15 minutes. Additionally, urgent care and specialist offices line Woodruff Road and Butler Road.

Dining and daily life: Butler Road, Woodruff Road, and the Mauldin Cultural Center are just 5 to 10 minutes away.

Airport and interstates: I-385 is about 5 minutes away, so it feels like it’s in your backyard. I-85 is about 15 minutes via I-385, and GSP is roughly 20 minutes.

Who it’s for: Mauldin offers the best overall balance for daily life. 🙌

💡 The Bottom Line

Don’t just buy based on what Greenville looks like today. Instead, buy based on what your Tuesday evening will look like in the future.

Quick recap:

  • 🥇 Mauldin: Best overall balance
  • 🥈 Five Forks: Best for schools
  • 🥉 Simpsonville: Best for value and space
