Downtown Spartanburg Walkability: Why Some Choose It Over Greenville ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

Downtown Spartanburg is one of the easiest downtowns in the Upstate to enjoy on foot. A steakhouse, an Italian spot, a wine shop, a burger joint, a coffee bar and an open-air biergarten all sit along the same short stretch of Main Street, and the minor league ballpark is downtown too. For people who want a walkable evening without Greenville’s crowds, that’s a big reason they pick Spartanburg.

I grew up in Greenville and spent years as a Spartanburg County Lake Warden, so I’ve seen both cities from the inside. Here’s what makes this downtown work on foot.

Is Downtown Spartanburg Walkable?

Yes. The core of downtown is compact, and many of its best-known spots share the same few blocks of West Main Street, roughly from the 120s to the 180s in street numbers. You can park once, have dinner, grab a drink and catch live music without moving your car.

Main Street used to feel built for cars. Today it has outdoor tables, live music and more people on the sidewalks. Downtown is small, which works in its favor. You won’t need a plan or an app to find your way around.

Where Can You Eat and Drink on Foot in Downtown Spartanburg?

Start on West Main Street. Within a short walk you can do a full night out, from wine to steak to a late drink. Here are the spots I send people to first:

  • Sophia’s Italian Restaurant (155 W. Main St.) has served downtown since 2020. It has a small bar with Italian reds, crisp whites and local craft beer. Reservations are welcome, and so are walk-ins.
  • The Peddler Steak House (149 W. Main St.) calls itself Spartanburg’s landmark steak house and has been open since 1970. Steaks are charcoal-grilled, and the aged ribeye is cut at your table. Seating is first come, first served. Groups of six or more should call ahead.
  • Bond Street Wines (145 W. Main St.) opened its Spartanburg store in 2017 and hosts weekend tastings on Fridays and Saturdays.

Look at those addresses. They’re practically next door to each other, which says more about downtown walkability than any score.

๐Ÿ” Best Burger in Spartanburg? My Vote Goes to BURGAR

Burgar (137 W. Main St.) is my pick for a casual meal downtown. It’s a build-your-own burger spot with toppings you don’t usually see on a burger, plus fries and cold drinks. It’s also on Experience Spartanburg’s Spartanburger Trail, a list of local burger stops that also includes Fr8yard and Fifth Third Park.

It’s an easy first stop before a game or a show, and it’s steps from everything else on this list.

Fr8yard, Coffee and Baseball: What Else Is Within Walking Distance?

Fr8yard (pronounced “freight yard”) sits on Main Street and calls itself South Carolina’s first open-air biergarten and restaurant. It has 16 beer taps, house-ground sausages, a 20-foot screen and a stage for live music. Hours depend on the weather, so check before you go.

For coffee, Little River’s Coffee Bar at 188 W. Main St. sits in the Masonic Temple building alongside Hub City Bookshop. Little River closed its separate drive-thru location at the end of 2025, but the downtown coffee bar is still open.

Sports fans get Fifth Third Park, home of the Hub City Spartanburgers, a minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The ballpark holds more than 5,000 fans on game days and is part of downtown, so you can eat on Main Street and walk to the game.

Downtown Spartanburg vs. Greenville: How Do They Compare?

Greenville’s downtown is bigger and busier, with more than 200 restaurants downtown. Spartanburg’s is smaller, calmer and easier to park in. Many buyers also find more house for their money in Spartanburg County.

The counties are close in size. Census figures put Greenville County at about 786 square miles of land and Spartanburg County at about 808. The feel is different, though. Spartanburg is a little more relaxed and less crowded.

Price is part of it. The Census estimate for the median value of owner-occupied homes (2020-2024) is about $299,000 in Greenville County and $233,300 in Spartanburg County. Those are owner estimates, not current sale prices, so call me for today’s numbers. My Greenville vs. Spartanburg: what your budget buys post goes deeper.

Lower prices don’t mean giving up lifestyle. Spartanburg offers:

  • A growing downtown scene
  • New construction and resale homes
  • Easy access to trails, lakes and mountain views
  • A slower, less congested pace

๐Ÿ‘ฎ Chris’s Take: Why Spartanburg Deserves a Real Look

As a Spartanburg County Lake Warden, I spent a lot of time on this side of the Upstate. People who only know Greenville are often surprised by how much downtown Spartanburg has changed and how easy it is to enjoy.

My advice is to spend one evening on West Main and one in downtown Greenville, then compare. Some people want Greenville’s energy. Others want to walk to dinner, find a parking spot and hear themselves talk. I’m also honest about the trade-offs, and I wrote them up in 5 honest downsides of moving to Spartanburg.
